November is the “Month of Gratitude,” likely because it contains the holiday for gratitude, Thanksgiving Day.
But, rather than seeing November as the month of Thanksgiving, I am challenging myself to see it as the kick-off for a year of gratitude.
As part of this challenge, I ask myself, “What would I miss if it were to be removed from my life tomorrow?”
At the top of the list, of course, are God, Jesus, and faith. Next are family, church, and friends. Health, home, pets, work/ financial resources are also near the top. But, as I check off these more obvious focal points of gratitude, I challenge myself to think of areas of my life that I take for granted. These include heat, air conditioning, a washer and dryer, a stove to cook on, a refrigerator, a vacuum cleaner—all objects that make my life easier and more pleasant.
But, the challenge of a year of gratitude forces me to go deeper into smaller parts of my life that bring happiness. Good books. The ability to email a friend. My cell phone. My car. These items make it easy to enjoy connecting to new worlds, friends, and places.
Next, drill down even further—a sunny day, the taste of morning coffee, sleeping in, hearing a new bird call, taking a walk.
The pursuit of gratitude is the pursuit of happiness, contentment, and joy. It shows us how much we take for granted. It reveals how little we need in terms of material wealth to enjoy the life God gave us. It reveals the many gifts we have if we take the time to think about and enjoy them.
If you have trouble thinking of something that brings you joy, try asking yourself some simple questions, such as:
1. What energizes me?
2. What song or movie inspires me?
3. What special places make me feel calm or a sense of awe?
4. What is something beautiful I recently saw or experienced?
5. What are aspects of my neighborhood that I am grateful for?
6. What am I looking forward to?
Gratitude brings joy, appreciation, and peace. It reduces stress. It promotes sound sleep. It enhances mental strength.
So, this November, kick off a Year of Gratitude. And see how it changes your life!
